What Is Hyperpigmentation?
- show up in small patches
- encompass large areas
- impact the whole body
While increased pigmentation is ordinarily harmless, it can be a sign of a more serious medical problem.
Different types of hyperpigmentation include:
- Melasma: Believed to be caused by changes in hormones; may develop when pregnant
- Sunspots: Common, related to excessive sun exposure
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: Result of skin inflammation or injury; common cause is acne

Causes of Hyperpigmentation
Hyperpigmentation can be caused by some drugs. As a side effect, some chemotherapy medications might produce hyperpigmentation.
Pregnancy alters hormone levels and, in certain women, can impact melanin production.
Addison’s disease, a rare endocrine condition, can cause hyperpigmentation, which is most visible in areas of sun exposure, such as the face, neck, and hands, and areas of friction, such as the elbows and knees.
Hyperpigmentation is caused by an increase in the level of a hormone in your body, which causes greater melanin synthesis.
Too much sun exposure can also increase melanin levels.
